Hyderabad: The SC/ST Faculty Forum and Concerned Teachers Forum, University of Hyderabad on Thursday condemned threats being issued to Prof. Kancha Ilaiah for his perceived derogatory remarks about a particular community in a book.
The faculty forum in statement issued here said intellectuals like Kalburgi, Gauri Lankesh, Pansare and Dabholkar have been killed in the recent past for their strong views on majoritarian religion and social practices.
The forum said in its view, Prof Illaiah is a provocative thinker and has continuously addressed the issue of civil wisdom and questioned the moral and ethical edifice of caste in contemporary India.
The teachers said they believe that intellectuals were entitled to express their opinion and their views ought to be subjected to public scrutiny and reasoning. However, disagreement is a necessary condition of public life, individuals and groups have no right to take law into their own hands to intimidate and physically assault social thinkers and intellectuals like Illaiah, the forums said.
