Hyderabad: The Agriculture Department is making elaborate arrangement for distribution of a variety of seeds at subsidised rates for the ensuing Yasangi (rabi) season. The department has begun dispatching the seeds to the district headquarters.
With the fresh spells of rain, farmers across the State began tilling their fields. Based on the indent submitted by the District Agriculture Officers (DAOs) for rabi, the agriculture commissionerate officials began sending seeds to district stock points, sources said.
The department officials are expecting that cultivation during this rabi will cover more area due to availability of water, seeds and fertilizers. During 2016, the rabi cultivation was confined to only 6.56 lakh hectares but this time, the department is expecting a 20-30 per cent increase.
The Agriculture action plan released by the department has targeted 13.62 lakh hectares for rabi this year. Based on the target, the department had procured seeds and supplied to district headquarters well in advance.
The State government announced huge subsidies for various crops ranging from 33 per cent to 50 per cent for rabi. “Enough seed stocks are available for rabi, and based on indent, seeds are being supplied to district as well as mandals,” Agriculture Secretary C Partha Sarathi told Telangana Today.
The department also called upon Agriculture Extension Officers (AEOs) to ensure that all farmers get subsidized seeds besides making sure that there is no scarcity of seeds in view of recent rains. Through the AEOs, the department is also publicising cultivation of millets instead of going for conventional crops.
