Hyderabad: A young girl, V. Priyanka, who was declared brain dead by doctors, has given a new lease of life to six desperate patients. The donor heart of the brain dead girl was sent to Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai for transplantation.
In the wee hours of Friday, the Hyderabad traffic police provided green channel that enabled transporting the donor heart to Shamshabad international airport from Yashoda Hospital, Malakpet in just 20 minutes.
The tenth standard student from Suryapet, V Priyanka, was hit by a four-wheeler while crossing a road in Damercherla, Nalgonda on Tuesday. A student of Sahithi High School, Suryapet, the youngster along with her classmates was on a study-tour to Sriharikota rocket launching station.
According to Jeevandan officials, Priyanka along with another friend Praneshwari and school principal Shanta were crossing the road for dinner, when they were hit by a four wheeler. The school principal Shanta and another girl Pranaeswari died on the spot while Priyanka had received serious head injuries and was rushed to a local hospital for first-aid and later to Yashoda Malakpet on Wednesday.
The Jeevandan organ donation officials grief counselled the bereaved family members of the young girl, whose parents gave the consent to donate organs. The surgical team at Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet retrieved heart, two kidneys, liver and two corneas.
The heart was flown to Chennai Fortis in a chartered flight, a kidney to NIMS, another to Yashoda Malakpet, liver was sent to Yashoda Hospital Secunderabad and two corneas were sent to L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI).
