Late Congress leader G Venkatswamy’s services to Telangana recalled

Hyderabad: Speakers cutting across party lines recalled and lauded the services of former Union Minister and senior Congress leader late G Venkatswamy on the occasion of his 88th birth anniversary on Thursday, stating that he had played a key role in the separate Statehood movement as also for the welfare of the labour class.

Former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, appreciating the State government for holding an official function to mark the veteran Congress leader’s birth anniversary, said: “Kaka (as Venkatswamy was fondly known) worked hard for separate Telangana State during his lifetime.”

Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said Venkatswamy was the spirit behind the Telangana movement in 1969 and encouraged youth to take part in the second phase of the movement. “He is only the third MP who was elected seven times to Parliament in the country,” he said, and urged his family members to take up activities in the name of Venkatswamy in rural areas so that people will remember him forever.

Former Minister P Shankar Rao requested the State government to include Venkatswamy’s life in school curriculum. Poet and revolutionary singer Gaddar and MP Srinivas thanked the State government for giving recognition to the Congress leader.

MPs D Srinivas, G Vinod and former Minister G Vivek, and other dignitaries also recalled services of Venkatswamy.
