Hyderabad: A former bartender D. Mahender, 35, attacked his aunt Kalavathi with a blade when she tried to stop him from allegedly killing his 13-month-old baby girl in Ibrahimpatnam on Thursday afternoon.
Mahender, according to the police, decided to kill the child as he bore a grudge against his wife Anuradha for lodging a dowry harassment complaint against him and for delivering a female baby. The incident occurred at Mahankalinagar under Ibrahimpatnam police station limits around 12.45 p.m..
The toddler’s mother Anuradha was at her mother’s residence in Mahankalinagar after she lodged a complaint against Mahender a few months ago.
As he received summons from the court asking him to attend trial on January 23, Mahender became furious believing that Anuradha was responsible for the case and decided to kill the toddler. As per his plan, he came to Anuradha’s parents’ house and tried to attack the child with a blade.
On seeing this, Kalavathi pushed him aside and took the baby into her hands. When she raised an alarm, he attacked her with the same blade resulting in injuries on her neck and stomach. Her neighbours rushed her to a private hospital where she was treated as an out-patient.
Mahender fled the spot. Anuradha was away at work when the incident happened. Ibrahimpatnam Sub-Inspector K Lingaswamy said an attempt to murder case under Section 307 of IPC was booked against Mahender and that efforts were on to trace him.
