New Delhi: To provide pop-culture buffs an international platform to showcase their fandom, Comic Con India on Wednesday announced a nation-wide costume play contest, the winner of which will represent India at Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo to be held on later this year.
Cosplay is a practice where comic fans dress up as their favourite characters from the world of pop culture – comics, television, films or video games.
The event will see the best cosplayers from across the country battle it out, with the grand prize winners of Cosplay contest of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai Comic Cons 2016 competing against each other.
The final leg of the Championship will be held on February 12, 2017 between 12 PM to 8 PM at Ansal Plaza here at a gala event that will also have live performances by popular band ‘Classic Collective’ and DJ Nisheeth Rao.
“Comic Con India has been at the forefront of promoting and fostering the cosplay eco-system in the country and with this initiative we take it a step ahead. I wish all the finalists the very best and may the best cosplayer win!” Jatin Varma, Founder, Comic Con India, said.
Once selected, the Indian champion qualifies directly into the championship round of Crown championship of Cosplay at C2E2 2017, where he/she will go up against champions from USA, France, Austria, China, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia.
In addition to the main Indian champion, there will be a “Fan Favourite” award too, decided through an online poll.
“The nominations for the cosplay have been announced and voting is open online, where fans can vote for their favourite finalist and be part of the fun,” Varma said.
Fans can find a pitch from each finalist on the website, in the form of images, videos and write ups about the participants after which they can make their pick. Voting for the competition closes on 8th Feb 2017.
