Chennai: Attired in her former party supremo late J Jayalalithaa’s favourite green colour, newly-appointed AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala on Thursday gracefully accepted the greetings of party workers amidst bursting of crackers.
Sasikala, who was not present at the AIADMK general council meeting, was anointed to the post through a resolution passed unanimously by the party.
The enthusiastic party cadre distributed sweets in every nook and corner, including at bus stops and the main roads, to celebrate her elevation in the AIADMK.
The post fell vacant following the demise of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on December 5.
An emotional Sasikala, who was seen wiping tears with a handkerchief at her Poes Garden residence, placed the resolution in front of a portrait of Jayalalithaa and paid floral tributes to her.
Some party leaders described the 60-year-old confidante of late Jayalalithaa as her heir apparent and who stood by the party supremo for decades.
Amid chants of “Long Live Chinnamma”, Sasikala told the leaders and AIADMK general council members that she accepted the decision in deference to the views of the cadre and leaders.
